Following the major engines themselves, Experian Hitwise announced the top search terms of 2011. The company looked at the top 1,000 search queries of 2011 and found that Facebook topped the list for the third year in a row.
Overall Facebook had four of the top 10 search terms for 2011, the same as in 2010. However query volume for the collection of Facebook terms grew 33 percent vs. last year.

According to a study in March by RSW/US: The “2011 New Business Report: A Client’s Look Ahead at Agencies,” only 44% of marketers are truly happy with their primary Agency, roughly similar to the past years’ studies. In 2008, 41% of marketers were “happy” and in 2009-2010, 47% stated they were “happy” with their current firm.
Only 55% of marketers state they would consider using their primary agency again if they were to put their account up for review. In 2008, 62% of marketers rated this question an “8-10″ and in the 2009-2010 survey, 69% of marketers rated this question an “8-10″, suggesting there was a higher likelihood of the marketer considering their current agency again.

Every one was buzzing last week over the Patent Facebook was granted for it’s news feed, but Google had a major patent victory too. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded the search giant a patent for using location in an advertising system last Tuesday.
Location based advertising is a big, and growing market. We use location based targeting at Pure Focus for almost every single client we have. Even national brands benefit from location based targeting. With Apple pushing it’s mobile platforms via iPhone & iPad it will be interesting to see how and if Google will invoke it’s recent Patent win.

The Pew Internet project has just released a report on consumers online news consumption: Understanding the Participatory News Consumer. Not entirely surprising, but interesting tidbits about portals, social media, and email use as it relates to news.
Some key highlights of the report:
- 92% get news from multiple platforms on a typical day, with half of those using four to six platforms daily. Fully 59% get news from a combination of online and offline sources on a typical day. Just over a third (38%) rely solely on offline sources, and 2% rely exclusively on the internet for their daily news.
- 75% of online news consumers say they get news forwarded through email or posts on social networking sites and 52% say they share links to news with others via those means
- 51% of social networking site (e.g. Facebook) users who are also online news consumers say that on a typical day they get news items from people they follow.

I have to admit I was what some would call a late bloomer with Facebook. I just didn’t have the time, see the point, or feel the need to get “on Facebook”. Well, a lot has changed in the past two years and it’s now become a daily habit for all of us at Pure Focus. The value of reconnecting with past friends, associates, and colleagues is worth every minute spent. But, that’s not the topic of this post.
You see, Facebook has been getting a lot of chatter lately about creeping up on Google’s turf. In fact, Google has for the first time listed Facebook as a true competitor in it’s annual 10K filing:
